Program Notes

L'Organo Marino (2012), was composed for large orchestra and is inspired by a work by the architect Nikola Bašić, located on the Zadar peninsula in Croatia. Along the edge of the sea, a system of polyethylene pipes with resonant cavities, installed beneath a series of large marble steps, functions as a gigantic musical instrument, continuously activated by the wind and the force of the waves.

More than the aesthetic qualities of this architectural work, it was the conceptual framework of the project that served as a heuristic model for the creative process behind L’Organo Marino. In it I perceived several ideas that play a central role in the gestural evolution of my work: the notion of a mobile sonic mass, of an energy flow that develops in an organic and unpredictable manner, as well as the idea of periodicity, which tends to manifest itself asymmetrically.

The concept of continuous metamorphosis therefore becomes a driving force of the musical discourse in L’Organo Marino, guided by simple principles such as the accumulation, convergence, or dissolution of energy—ideas inspired by the phenomenology of ocean currents.
