Francisco Ferro is a French-Brazilian composer whose work explores how sound shapes our experience of time, movement, and space. His music draws on acoustic and psychoacoustic phenomena, using timbre, resonance, texture and orchestration to create sensations of motion, depth, and transformation. He is particularly interested in the ways musical processes unfold in perception, and in how sound can evoke a sense of physical space without relying on its actual spatial distribution.

Alongside his concert and electroacoustic work, Ferro also composes for film, creating sound worlds that balance the visceral with the restrained, and the organic with the electronic. Acoustic instruments are often transformed through subtle electronic processes, resulting in sparse but emotionally charged textures. Working closely with each film, he develops a musical language that changes from project to project while remaining unmistakably his own, with music that operates beneath the surface to shape the emotional experience of the film.

His music has been performed by ensembles and orchestras including Jack Quartet, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble Télémaque, MDI Ensemble, Camerata Aberta, Orchestre National Avignon-Provence, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais. Recent projects include Les Inflexions d’Escher, created with Ensemble Télémaque, and Six degrés de liberté, an electroacoustic work presented at Festival Viva Villa and premiered at Festival Mixtur in Barcelona.

He holds a doctorate in composition from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where his research focused on the perception of musical time and space. His work has been developed through residencies at the Villa Médicis in Rome, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, and Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, and he has received commissions from institutions including the French Ministry of Culture and SACEM.
